Acupuncture is a part of Traditional Chinese Medicine that involves insertion of non-
hypodermic needles into selected points throughout the body to resolve both branch
and root-cause issues. These needles are thinner and are designed to push flesh out of
the way to activate acupuncture point functions as opposed to hypodermic needles used in western medical settings which are designed to puncture flesh in order to inject or withdraw fluids. Selected points are determined by the acupuncturist after an intake
that involves subjective & objective questioning, tongue & pulse diagnosis, relevant
physical examinations, and observations of the patient presentation. Because diagnosis is based on set patterns operating on physical, mental, and systemic levels, the goal of each treatment is to restore balance through the selected points. Optimizing systemic function and reducing or extinguishing negative patterns is the objective and what acupuncture allows for the patient is a tailored treatment that addresses their specific set of issues.
Like acupuncture Chinese Herbology and Dietary recommendations based on Traditional Chinese Medicine are invaluable in readjusting the body's natural order either for restorative purposes or to correct improper functions. The history stretches back for thousands of years and have been successful in treating something as simple as a cold to chronic situations that have persisted with a patient for decades. This also allows for additional work to be done in between treatments which will expedite results.
Stasis and stagnation in Chinese Medicine lead to many problems in both musculo-skeletal issues as well as pathogenic presentations. In cupping we use a suction technique that helps to pull that out from the muscles without using any invasive techniques that might cause more stasis and stagnation in a patient's presentation.
It is an age old technique that helps to break up any stasis and stagnation both in the muscle layer and channel layers in Chinese Medicine. A tool is used to perform a firm sliding technique with varying degrees of force to break up any areas of stasis and stagnation to maximize free-flow of the bodies requirements.
With a rich history that focuses on maintaining or restoring a more youthful and plush appearance in both the root and the branch of a patient's pattern, facial cosmetic rejuvenation brings attention to the face with acupuncture while also treating one's constitution simultaneously. This program is more selective and will require attention to lifestyle recommendations for better results.

"Kuan fixed my arm pain with [Tui Na] when my shoulders were uneven thanks to my heavy messenger bag that I'd been carrying on one shoulder. Kuan also needled me twice, once when I was coming down with a cold and once when I had some stomach pain. I've been a skeptic of acupuncture and even though I generally don't have a problem with needles, the thought of having them stuck in my face made me uncomfortable. However, I felt much better after he needled my face for the cold and I didn't get full-blown sick as a result. As for the stomach pain, I've been having chronic issues and been to a number of different doctors and specialists and had all sorts of tests run, but no one has figured out what's wrong. Kuan needled me for that too and it abated the pain when I was having a bout. He also gave me advice on some herbs to use and foods to avoid. Thank for being awesome, Kuan!"
"Prior to seeing Kuan, I didn't know what to expect from Acupuncture treatments. Starting at my initial consultation, Kuan made me feel at ease. I could tell that he genuinely cared through his thoroughness and ability to get to the root causes of some of my issues. He is equipped with a great sense of humor along with strong technical knowledge.
The treatment itself was very successful and I would highly recommend Kuan to anybody!"

"Recently, I found myself facing one of the hardest times in my life. I have three children who were all conceived through IVF on our first try. After much contemplation with my husband, together, we reached the decision to try for a fourth child. As I felt I was reaching my age limit (35) for feeling comfortable carrying a baby, it had been my intention to become pregnant as soon as possible to avoid any potential complications.
However, things didn't quite work out as planned. I was on the last try my insurance would cover for IVF, and when it didn't work, I was beyond devastated. I could not shake my dream of having a fourth child, and became committed to researching what other options could possibly work for someone with PCOS.
In my research, I discovered how profoundly positive results have been for women who receive acupuncture while trying to conceive. After finding out my insurance company had approved me for IUI with fertility shots, I began my comprehensive hunt for the best acupuncturist in the Chicago area. I was blessed enough to discover Kuan-Ren Su, founder of Acu Design Health.
Kuan-Ren Su is not only a knowledgeable, and brilliant acupuncturist, but also a very down-to-earth, caring, and empathetic holistic healer. With a degree in psychology, coupled with his extensive education in Chinese Medicine, he has mastered the holistic art of listening, and catering to the unique needs of the individuals he treats.
After falling ill with fever and flu the evening before my first IUI, I was unable to make it to my appointment to receive acupuncture. My acupuncture appointment was planned for the evening before IUI, because stimulating my follicles very close to insemination time was crucial and, studies show, directly related to statistical success rates. After informing Kuan of my illness, he suggested I get as much rest as possible that evening, before my IUI the next day. Kuan assured me I need not worry, because with timing being so critical, he would fit me in for an acupuncture session in the morning - before my IUI appointment.
With God's help, Kuan's commitment to individualizing my treatment lead to my speedy IUI success! Finally, after riding the fertility roller coaster for many months, Kuan helped me conceive through IUI on the first try! He helped my follicles prepare for fertilization, which lead to pregnancy. I am now 13 weeks pregnant, and could not be more happy, excited, and thankful I received the best quality and care from Kuan at Acu Design Health."
"I currently live in Milwaukee and would travel over an hour to come work with Kuan! His practice gave me my first acupuncture experience, and I'm so glad that I went to him first! I started acupuncture for my chronic dry eyes and have seen a decrease in pain since I've started. Kuan gave me great tips to follow outside of treatment, and we really worked together as a team! If it wasn't for the distance I'd be there twice a week!"
During my pregnancy with my second child (I had a rough pregnancy with my first child), Kuan worked tirelessly for a holistic approach to any ailments. In the first trimester, Kuan treated me for nausea and lower back pain. When diagnosed with gestational diabetes, Kuan worked on a dietary plan for me so I was able to avoid glucose shots and control my diabetes on diet alone. In the third trimester, my daughter was breech and by using both acupuncture and moxabustion, he was able to get her to flip at 36 weeks so I was able to have the VBAC that I desired. Even now, Kuan has worked out a dietary plan for a nursing mother and also used acupuncture to stimulate lactation, as well. Also, when I have gotten sick, Kuan has been the person that I call for a holistic approach on healing with herbs and acupuncture instead of taking any medication as a nursing mother.
When both my kids got sick with fevers and colds, I took them to see Kuan who sat down and chatted up my 3yo son. He was able to sink his fever from 104 down to 100 degrees within an hour and recommended a natural herbal formula for him to take. Even though the formula didn't taste the best (we chased each sip with a bite of a cookie), I felt that it worked better in healing my son and taking care of his symptoms than just suppressing them.
Same for my 14 month old daughter, he took great pains in reducing her fever and making her comfortable with some acupressure and also with an herbal consultation which helped greatly with her cough and reduced it within a day.
Kuan is expert at using Traditional Chinese Medicine Techniques to identify imbalances related to chronic or acute conditions. While very formal in the detailed procedures he follows to evaluate and treat conditions, he relates to clients with sincere warmth and interest in their perceptions of their physical condition, balancing objective observations with the client's reported experience. I first went to him for cosmetic acupuncture, which helps me at the age of 67 to maintain my confidence in the work world. More recently, he successfully treated me for an ear infection, which antibiotics failed to cure. He is also treating me for muscular tightness in my neck probably brought about by poor posture at the computer. He also provides me with nutritional and exercise advice. Both of his offices are exceptionally quiet and relaxing. I have been to various Chicago area acupuncturists since 1980. Kuan is the best! His knowledge of and ability to apply the principles of TCM is superior. Friendly personality and very respectful of his clients.
I've been seeing Kuan at the Lakeview location regularly for pain management. I have been suffering with PID, low back pain and poor circulation.
My initial visit with Kuan was very thorough. Not only do you dive into symptoms, but your lifestyle, diet, activity, is also given attention. If you are only accustomed to traditional western medical doctors, be prepared to really describe your mind and body in a very detailed manner. Kuan is very communicative about his goals with his current treatment as well as long term goals. He tells you what he is doing and why, gives you time to relax with the needles, and does this all with a great sense of humor and professionalism.
Going regularly, once a week, has really helped with my pain associated with PID and lumbar issues. I do not like to take pain killers, and my sessions really helped make my pain more manageable and at times, subside. It is worthwhile for me to mention that I still had to get surgery for my PID, but without my weekly sessions with Kuan, the 1 1/2 months I had to wait for the surgery would have been unbearable.
My lumbar is so messed up even with my weekly chiropractic visits. I do not get the best adjustments because my muscles are so tight and inflamed. Acupuncture has helped with relaxing those muscles, helping me get more efficient chiropractic adjustments. My back, body and mind are always so calm and relaxed after each session.
Along with acu, Kuan will emphasize and re emphasize importance of diet. Not just, eating your fruits and veggies, but what will be most helpful to assuage your symptoms. I had really poor circulation before seeing him, hands and feet super cold, low energy, foggy mind. After incorporating (some, not all...never giving up coffee! lol) Kuan's diet recommendations, I have noticed a significant change in my circulation. The body must be nourished inside out and thought of as a whole, and not compartmentalized.
He also gave my dad a consultation, knowing he was hesitant about acupuncture in general. Not once did he pressure my dad into seeing him for treatment, but did communicate to him why and how acupuncture would treat his ailments. He even encouraged him to get opinions from other L.Ac. These actions show how much he believes in Chinese medicine, and how much he cares about people taking care of themselves.
Sorry for the essay, but I believe in this treatment. Do yourself, your body, your mind a favor....go see Kuan at Acu Design Health!
